Anthropic Conceptual Reasoning Fellowship 2027: Earn Up to $167,000 for a Four-Month AI Research Fellowship
Overview
The Conceptual Reasoning Fellowship is a four-month research programme designed to bring experienced researchers and subject-matter experts together with Anthropic’s research teams. Participants investigate complex questions requiring expert judgment, working with Claude to evaluate its capabilities, identify weaknesses, and develop methods for improving performance in specialised fields. The default location for the programme is San Francisco, California, though remote arrangements within the United States may be considered in certain circumstances, and all fellows must attend a one-week in-person orientation in San Francisco.
Who can apply
Applicants must hold a PhD, be completing a PhD in philosophy, cognitive science, economics, public policy or law, or demonstrate equivalent research experience. Candidates must also have practical experience using Claude and Claude Code in their regular workflow, be enthusiastic about AI reasoning potential, feel comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with substantial independence, and be able to deliver concrete research outcomes within four months. Applicants must already have existing authorisation to work in the United States for the entire fellowship period, as Anthropic is unable to sponsor visas. Preferred qualifications include experience designing evaluations, benchmarks, datasets, or expert assessment rubrics, alongside demonstrated disciplinary expertise through research, scholarship, or high-level analytical writing.
What you get
Successful candidates receive compensation ranging from US$100,000 to US$167,000 for the four-month fellowship, alongside other benefits. Participants also receive mentorship, access to Claude models and internal evaluation tools, and opportunities to collaborate with other fellows and Anthropic researchers. Some placements may be considered for an extension beyond the initial four-month term.
Requirements
Applicants are required to prepare a current CV or résumé, provide a LinkedIn profile or résumé, identify two professional references, and explain their proposed research ideas. Additional application details require information about Claude Code experience, previous artificial intelligence or machine-learning work, and the disciplinary field in which the candidate intends to contribute. Later selection stages typically involve a take-home exercise and discussions with researchers and potential mentors.
How to apply
Interested candidates must locate the position on Anthropic’s official careers website and complete the online application before the closing date.
