Overview

The Ibrahim Leadership Fellowships are offered by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to support emerging and mid-career African professionals in developing their leadership skills and contributing to policy development at major international institutions. Established in 2011, the programme aims to identify, mentor, and support the next generation of African leaders by providing practical experience in international development, economic policy, trade, and institutional leadership. Selected participants complete a 12-month placement working within the executive offices of partner organizations, gaining exposure to high-level decision-making, research, and strategic leadership alongside direct mentorship from institution heads. Upon completing the programme, fellows join the Now Generation Network to connect with other young African leaders and maintain their involvement in the continent's development.

Who can apply

The programme is open to nationals of African countries who are emerging or mid-career professionals. Candidates must hold a master's degree and possess at least seven years of relevant professional experience. In addition, applicants must be under 40 years of age, or under 45 years of age for women with children. Candidates must also satisfy any additional criteria established by their chosen host institution.

What you get

Selected fellows receive a financial stipend of US$100,000 to cover the duration of the 12-month programme. Participants gain high-level professional experience through placements in the executive offices of established international organizations, alongside direct mentorship from the heads of those host institutions. The fellowships are hosted at three organizations offering distinct working environments: the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire; the International Trade Centre in Geneva, Switzerland; and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Successful participants also gain access to an international professional network by becoming members of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s Now Generation Network.

How to apply

Interested candidates must select one of the three participating host institutions and submit their application through that organization's official channels. Applicants should review the specific eligibility criteria, required documentation, and application instructions provided by their preferred institution, as procedures and closing dates vary across the host organizations.
