Research Associate / Senior Research Associate for Advanced Quantum Networking x 2 positions available
Overview
The University of Bristol is seeking two researchers to join the Smart Internet Lab within the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. Appointees will contribute to the creation of advanced entanglement-based quantum networks, concentrating on the scalable and reconfigurable distribution of entanglement across fibre infrastructure. The positions will involve collaboration with quantum-networking specialists alongside academic and commercial partners on initiatives such as the EPSRC Integrated Quantum Networks Hub, the National Dark Fibre Facility, and TITAN.
Successful candidates will design, assemble, and test quantum network systems within laboratory settings, metropolitan testbeds, and national-scale infrastructure. Duties include handling entangled-photon sources, single-photon detection, wavelength routing, optical switching, timing synchronisation, and network monitoring. Researchers will conduct experiments, run field trials, document experimental records, adhere to safety standards, and author project reports and publications. Depending on experience and track record, appointments will be made at either the Research Associate or Senior Research Associate level. Senior appointments will carry additional duties such as mentoring researchers, designing methodologies, and aiding in research proposals.
Requirements
Candidates must hold a relevant honours degree or equivalent qualification, paired with either a relevant PhD that is completed or nearing completion, or equivalent research background. Applicants must demonstrate experimental experience in areas such as quantum communications, photonics, quantum optics, or optical communications. Practical capability in building, aligning, integrating, and diagnosing fibre-optic, optical, or single-photon setups is required, alongside a solid grasp of quantum networking and entanglement.
Applicants should possess strong communication abilities, work well within interdisciplinary environments, and have the capability to organise research tasks effectively. Those seeking appointment at the Senior Research Associate level must also present a history of high-calibre research outputs, independent experimental design, advanced data analysis skills, and experience in building collaborations.
What you get
The roles offer an annual salary ranging between £40,704 and £51,258, determined by experience and appointment grade. The posts are full-time, requiring 35 hours per week on site. One position has an open-ended contract with fixed funding until 31/03/2028, and the second position has an open-ended contract with fixed funding until 31/12/2027, with both carrying the possibility of extension.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 23:59 UK time on 9 November 2026. Interviews are expected to take place during the week starting 16 November 2026.
