PhD Studentship: Interfacial Chemistry of High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries
Overview
The University of Nottingham is seeking a PhD student to join the battery research team within the Nottingham Applied Materials and Interfaces Group. The project focuses on the interfacial chemistry of high-energy lithium-ion batteries, specifically investigating the fundamental chemical reactions occurring between nickel-rich positive electrode materials and battery electrolytes. The successful candidate will combine electrochemistry, physical-organic methods, and battery testing with advanced chemical and spectroscopic characterisation to identify degradation processes and develop suppression strategies. The work is supervised by Professor Lee Johnson and takes place on site in a collaborative research environment with access to modern battery and analytical facilities.
Who can apply
The position is open to graduates with a first-class degree at Master's level in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, physics, or a related discipline, or an equivalent overseas qualification. Candidates holding a strong 2:1 degree may also be considered. Previous experience in batteries or electrochemistry is advantageous but not required. Both Home and international candidates are eligible to apply.
What you get
The funding associated with this PhD is eligible for an EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award, subject to a competitive review at the Faculty of Science level. The award covers Home tuition fees and provides an annual stipend of 21,805 GBP for the 2026 to 2027 academic year. Successful international candidates will receive a University of Nottingham Fee Difference scholarship to cover the difference between Home and international fee rates.
Requirements
Applicants must hold the required academic qualifications in a relevant discipline. Funding is not guaranteed upon application and is subject to a competitive review process.
How to apply
Candidates wishing to discuss the project informally may contact Professor Lee Johnson. Applications must be submitted through the University of Nottingham admissions portal.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 2027-01-26. Funding outcomes will be communicated in March 2027.
