Overview

The University of Sheffield is seeking a Research Associate in Strong Light-Matter Coupling within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. This position is part of a five-year, seventy-three hundred thousand pound collaborative project funded by EPSRC and led by Professor Graham Leggett, involving a team of thirteen researchers across the Universities of Sheffield and Bristol. The programme aims to develop a modular approach to creating photonic materials inspired by biological photosynthetic membranes. The role involves working with collaborators in Sheffield to understand how molecular architectures regulate light-matter coupling, performing spectroscopic measurements on silicon nitride resonators and cavity modes, measuring angle-resolved dispersions, and modeling data using FDTD methods to help develop materials for efficient excitation transfer.

Who can apply

Candidates must be educated to a PhD level in physics, materials science, or engineering. Applicants should possess expertise and experience in nanophotonics, spectroscopy, and modeling methods used for investigating strong light-matter coupling.

What you get

The position offers a salary between thirty-nine thousand five hundred and sixty pounds and forty-six thousand nine hundred and seventy pounds per annum. Employees receive forty-one days of annual leave, which includes closure days and Bank Holidays, with an option to purchase up to ten additional days. Additional benefits include up to five days of paid time off for emergency caring responsibilities, a competitive pension scheme, a cycle to work scheme, and retail discounts. The workplace provides development programmes, mentoring schemes, wellbeing and confidential emotional support, paid leave for IVF treatment, and support for employees experiencing the menopause, fertility treatment, or having a baby.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD in physics, materials science, or engineering and demonstrate practical experience in nanophotonics, spectroscopy, and related modeling methodologies.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 26 November 2026.
