Overview

This PhD studentship focuses on organic supramolecular chemistry to manipulate the equilibrium between monomers and polymers, aiming to dismantle polymers using osmotic pressure. Based in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, the project involves subjecting polymer nanoparticles to osmotic pressure, exploring reversible depolymerisation, and developing dynamic materials where monomers can be exchanged between different polymers. Students will gain experience in organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, nanoscale characterisation, NMR, and electron microscopy, alongside collaboration opportunities for SAXS, SANS, and microscopy. Mentoring in project design, writing, and presentation skills is provided, supported by funding from the EPRSC, an ERC Starting Grant, and a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship.

Who can apply

The position is suited for motivated students with backgrounds in supramolecular, polymer, or synthetic organic chemistry. Applicants should have obtained a strong Master degree in chemistry or a related discipline. Due to funding restrictions, non self-funded applicants who are not eligible for UK home fee status are only considered in exceptional circumstances, while self-funded students are welcome to contact Steve to discuss their situation. The School of Chemistry welcomes applicants from all backgrounds.

What you get

The position offers a salary of £0 per annum along with enhanced funding for training and travel. Participants receive close mentoring and opportunities to attend conferences.

Requirements

Applicants need a strong Master degree in chemistry or a related discipline, and background experience in supramolecular, polymer, or synthetic organic chemistry.

How to apply

Interested candidates should contact Steve by email in the first instance, including a copy of their CV and a covering letter outlining their research interests.

Key dates

The closing date is 2027-01-30, though applicants are advised to apply as soon as possible since the position will be filled when the right candidate is found.
