Research Associate in Intelligent Geophysics for Offshore Wind
Overview
The University of Glasgow invites applications for a Research Associate in Intelligent Geophysics for Offshore Wind within the College of Science and Engineering at the James Watt School of Engineering. This position is tied to a major UKRI-funded Fellowship focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence, scientific machine learning, and subsurface engineering. The research aims to resolve fundamental challenges in interpreting and integrating marine geophysical, geological, and geotechnical data to enhance subsurface characterisation and decision-making for offshore renewable energy projects.
Who can apply
Applications are welcomed from individuals currently working in industry alongside those following traditional academic career paths. Candidates bringing expertise in marine geophysics, offshore site characterisation, and subsurface interpretation are encouraged to apply, with equivalent industrial experience considered. All applicants are required to have the legal right to live and work in the United Kingdom or be eligible to obtain permission to work there. The role may qualify for visa sponsorship through the Skilled Worker route or the Global Talent visa route, depending on individual eligibility and meeting Home Office requirements.
What you get
The successful candidate will receive a salary ranging from £41,064 to £46,049 per annum at Grade 7. The position is full-time, operating at 35 hours per week on a fixed-term contract basis with funding available until 30th September 2029 in the first instance. The postholder will join an interdisciplinary team led by Dr Róisín Buckley, gain access to world-class computational and experimental facilities, and collaborate with leading academic and industrial partners across the UK data science and artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Requirements
The role involves processing, interpreting, and integrating large and complex offshore datasets to understand geological variability, uncertainty, and geohazards. While experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or advanced data analytics is advantageous, it is not strictly required, as the project offers opportunities to develop expertise in these areas. Applicants must also satisfy all necessary legal criteria for working in the United Kingdom.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 29th November 2026 at 23:45pm.
