Overview

The University of Cambridge is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Research Assistant position within the Department of Pathology. This full-time, fixed-term role is based in the laboratory of Professor Catherine Merrick in the Division of Microbiology and Parasitology. The position is available for an initial duration of 20 months, with a start date in January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter, and includes a six-month probationary period.

The project focuses on high-risk and high-gain discovery research investigating the biology of a newly discovered virus in malaria parasites, funded via a BBSRC Pioneer grant. The work involves utilizing cutting-edge techniques in cell biology, biochemistry, transcriptomics, and molecular genetics using cultured Plasmodium parasites. The appointee will work within the Cambridge Pathology Department, which includes four parasitology research groups studying malaria and leishmania, and will operate in recently refurbished Category-three containment laboratories.

Who can apply

Applicants are required to hold or be close to completing a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, or parasitology, alongside skills in molecular genetics and cell culture. Relevant experience must be evidenced by peer-reviewed publications. Desirable qualifications include specific expertise in Plasmodium culture and molecular genetics, particularly involving P. falciparum or P. knowlesi, as well as transcriptomic data analysis, RNA-seq, and protein biochemistry. Candidates must also demonstrate strong organizational, problem-solving, communication skills, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.

What you get

The salary ranges from £33,002 to £46,049 per annum. Appointment at the Research Associate level requires the award of a PhD. Candidates who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be appointed at the Research Assistant level at Grade 5, with the salary and title amended to Research Associate at Grade 7 upon confirmation of the PhD award.

Contact details and email addresses for two referees must be provided, with at least one referee familiar with the candidate's research in their primary field. Unrequested additional documents will not be considered. Applications and correspondence should reference PK51454.
