Overview

This fully funded, 3.5-year PhD project focuses on exploring how Mycobacterium tuberculosis uses nutrients and how alterations in nutrient transport affect pathogen biology. Tuberculosis remains a leading global cause of death from a single bacterial pathogen, prompting the need for new diagnostics and therapeutics. The research combines microbiology, genetic, biochemical, and analytical techniques to understand nutrient utilisation during infection, building upon previous work to reveal how the pathogen adapts and survives in the human host. The position is hosted by the University of Manchester, located within the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and the Michael Smith building, offering access to world-class facilities and multidisciplinary training.

Who can apply

Home students are eligible to apply for this studentship. Candidates must hold, or be about to obtain, at least a 2.1 UK honours degree in a relevant subject, and ideally hold a master’s level qualification at merit or distinction or an international equivalent. Applicants should have a strong interest in pathogen biochemistry, while prior research experience in microbiology and analytical methods is desirable.

What you get

The successful candidate receives a fully funded studentship covering tuition fees alongside an annual tax-free stipend set at the UKRI rate of 21,805 British pounds for the 2026/27 period. The stipend is expected to increase annually. The researcher will also gain multidisciplinary training and experience within a collaborative research environment.

Requirements

Applicants are required to submit their applications directly through the online application portal. Candidates do not need to contact Professor Elizabeth Fullam prior to applying unless specific information is required.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-11-06, and the project start date is scheduled for January or April 2027. Early application is recommended as the advertisement may be removed prior to the deadline.
