Overview

The University of Cambridge is offering two full-time, fixed-term positions as a Research Assistant or Associate within the Cambridge Institute for Technology and Humanity and the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence. The appointment is for 24 months in the first instance, with an ideal start date of 1st of December or soon after. The selected candidates will work on an interdisciplinary project focused on AI Evaluation, specifically establishing red lines for artificial intelligence using cognitive capability and propensity profiles. This work draws primarily from artificial intelligence, technical AI safety, Bayesian statistics and causal modelling, psychology, and AI governance.

Who can apply

Candidates should note that appointment at the Research Associate level is dependent on the award of a PhD. Applicants who have submitted their PhD but have not yet received it will be appointed at the Research Assistant grade, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been conferred. Applicants must ensure they are eligible to live and work in the UK.

What you get

The available positions provide a salary ranging from £33,002 to £46,049 per annum. The funding for these posts is available for two years in the first instance.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a Curriculum Vitae, a covering letter of no more than 1,000 words detailing relevant experience and interests regarding the project, and the names and contact details of two referees familiar with their work. No unrequested additional documents will be considered. Candidates should quote reference GO51404 on their application and in any correspondence.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 1st of November 2026. Interviews are planned for the second week of November, subject to change.
