Overview

The Department of Physical Sciences and Engineering at Royal Holloway, University of London, is hiring a postdoctoral research associate in geochemistry. The postholder will join the NERC-funded project Calibrating the rhenium isotope proxy for petrogenic CO2 emissions from rock weathering, known as RE-FLUX, led by Professor Alex Dickson and Professor Rebecca Fisher. The project aims to advance a new proxy for geological emissions of carbon dioxide to the oceans and atmosphere from rock weathering.

The work involves isotope measurements of experimental and field samples, fieldwork in the UK and Europe, collaboration with project partners, and presenting results through publications and at UK and international conferences. The postholder can use several career development initiatives, including membership of the Centre of Climate Ocean and Atmosphere and the Early Career Researcher Academy, and research training through the Researcher Development Programme.

Requirements

Applicants should have demonstrable research knowledge and experience in geochemistry, stratigraphy, the global carbon cycle and weathering processes. Experience with non-traditional isotopes, molecular geochemistry or Earth-System modelling would be beneficial.

What you get

The full-time post lasts three years from January 2027. The expected starting salary is £41,374 per annum including London Allowance, although appointment at a higher point may be made for candidates with exceptional relevant skills and experience. Benefits include generous annual leave, a pension scheme with a generous employer contribution, schemes such as Cycle to Work, season ticket loans and help with eyesight testing, and free parking. The post is based in Egham, Surrey, on a leafy campus near Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance of London.

How to apply

Applications are made through the college's online recruitment pages, quoting reference 0926-325. An informal discussion about the post is available with Professor Alex Dickson.

Key dates

The closing date is 23:59 on 20 October 2026, and interviews take place in the week commencing 2 November 2026.
