The post is a globally roving, fixed-term Programme role in Oxfam's International division, classified at Grade C1 and set at 36 hours per week. The minimum salary is £36,826. The person hired works remotely from their home base between deployments.
Humanitarian Support Personnel form a global pool of specialists who lend technical skills to Oxfam country teams during emergencies such as conflicts, natural disasters, disease outbreaks and displacement. Deployments generally last from several weeks up to six months. Current emergency programmes are spread across Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe.
What the role involves
The central purpose is to give technical leadership and support on Public Health Promotion within water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes. The specialist works with country teams and national and international partners to strengthen approaches built on community engagement, making sure affected people help identify public health risks and shape solutions. The work takes into account women, men, girls and boys and aims to promote safe, equitable and culturally appropriate use and management of WASH services and resources.
The post also involves building the capacity of staff and partners through mentoring, coaching, training, technical guidance and learning approaches. Deployments usually respond to fast-changing emergencies or complex settings where a programme must scale up quickly.
Requirements
Applicants need at least five years of relevant international humanitarian experience, including substantial work in Public Health Promotion and/or WASH programming in emergency contexts. They should have responded to different kinds of emergencies, such as armed conflict, displacement, natural disasters and disease outbreaks, and worked across varied geographical settings.
A relevant graduate qualification or equivalent professional experience is expected, in fields such as public health, social sciences, environmental health, anthropology or community development. Fluent written and spoken English and French are essential. Arabic or Spanish is desirable.
Oxfam also looks for skills in technical leadership, participatory approaches, capacity building, risk analysis, programme adaptation, partnership development, communication and relationship building across cultures.
