Overview

Oxfam International is hiring a Safeguarding Advisor for Oxfam in Africa. The post is meant to strengthen systems that protect staff, partners and communities from sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment and child abuse across Sub-Saharan Africa. It sits within the People and Culture Team but operates with considerable professional independence, working with the One Africa Director, the leadership team, Country Directors and safeguarding colleagues in different countries.

What the role involves

The advisor leads the rollout of Oxfam's safeguarding strategy in the region. That includes developing prevention and response strategies, building the capacity of country offices and partners, designing community feedback and complaints mechanisms, setting up referral pathways so people who report concerns can reach support, and advising on survivor-centred case management, investigations and allegation management. The advisor matrix-manages country-level Safeguarding Focal Points, belongs to Oxfam's Global Safeguarding Network and represents the organisation in inter-agency forums such as the IASC Accountability to Affected Populations and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Task Team.

Requirements

Oxfam wants demonstrated experience preventing and responding to sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment and child abuse, ideally within an international NGO, UN body, civil society organisation or similar setting. Knowledge of safeguarding legislation across African countries is highly desirable. Fluency in both English and French, written and spoken, is essential. Strong communication and facilitation skills, discretion, integrity and resilience are expected, and experience in gender-transformative programming is an advantage.

What you get

The post is full-time on a one-year fixed-term contract at Internal Job Grade C1, National, with pay set by the applicable Oxfam range. Candidates may be based in any country where Oxfam has a presence, provided a contract can be arranged directly or through a hosting affiliate. Oxfam cannot guarantee a work permit or support relocation, so applicants must already have the legal right to work where they live.

How to apply

Applicants submit an up-to-date CV, a cover letter and evidence of how they meet the essential criteria in the job profile.

Key dates

The closing date is 7 September 2026 at 23:59 GMT/BST/EAT.
