Overview
Oxfam is hiring a Safeguarding Advisor for Oxfam in Africa. The role provides strategic and technical leadership on safeguarding across Sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to protect communities, staff, volunteers and partners from sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, child abuse and other harm. It is a one-year fixed-term post, renewable depending on funding and organisational needs, classified as Internal Job Grade C1, National. The vacancy gives no specific salary figure. It is described as an independent, continental-level position within the People and Culture Team, working closely with the One Africa Director, the Oxfam in Africa Leadership Team, Country Directors and safeguarding colleagues, with a matrix reporting line to the Oxfam International Head of Safeguarding.
Responsibilities include developing and implementing prevention and response strategies, advising senior leadership and country teams, building capacity in country offices and partners, designing community feedback and complaints mechanisms, setting up referral pathways, supporting survivor-centred case management, advising on investigations and allegation management, promoting consistent practice across affiliates, supporting culture change, contributing to assurance and risk management and representing Oxfam in inter-agency forums. The advisor also joins the Global Safeguarding Network and may represent Oxfam externally, including on the IASC AAP/PSEA Task Team.
Who can apply
Oxfam wants an experienced professional with proven experience preventing and responding to sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment and child abuse, and advising, training and building capacity across several country offices. Hands-on experience with case management, survivor-centred approaches, investigations, sensitive cases, feedback mechanisms, referral systems, confidential information, ethical data management and African safeguarding legal environments is valued, as is work in an international NGO, UN body or similar. Fluency in English and French, written and spoken, is essential. Strong communication, trust-building, resilience, discretion and integrity are expected.
Requirements
Oxfam cannot guarantee a work permit or support relocation, so applicants must already hold and be able to keep the legal right to work where they are based. The organisation is open to discussing flexible working.
