Overview

Nonviolent Peaceforce is looking for a Communications Consultant for its Changemakers programme. The Changemakers initiative supports leaders working in protection, peacebuilding and safety in conflict-affected settings, giving them tools to integrate Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP) approaches and connect with others across contexts. A key element is a Foundational Training on UCP in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2026, followed by mentorship and micro-grants for UCP-inspired initiatives. The consultant documents and communicates the programme's impact, stories and lessons.

The work is mostly remote, with about two weeks of travel to Nairobi in November 2026. The contract runs from 14 September 2026 to 31 January 2027, and payment follows satisfactory completion of agreed deliverables with timesheets and invoices.

The consultant prepares a communications plan and written and audiovisual materials, including social media content, and acts as the communications contact for the Changemakers cohort. At the Nairobi training the consultant provides on-site communications leadership, takes photographs and film, and interviews participants to produce human-interest stories, blogs, social posts, project briefs, talking points and visibility materials. Informed consent is required before in-depth interviews, and safeguarding and communications ethics must be followed. The consultant may also design flyers, posters, one-page documents, infographics, fact sheets and reporting products, and manage versions, sign-offs and timelines.

Requirements

Applicants should have a postgraduate degree and/or equivalent professional experience in communications, at least four years of professional experience including two years in humanitarian communications or related work, excellent English, strong storytelling and the ability to work independently in fast-changing settings. Practical skills in videography, photography and editing are required, including creative edits with cuts, montages, sound synchronization and lower-third captions, and candidates must have their own professional equipment. Emergency humanitarian communications experience is an advantage, as is French and/or Arabic. Preference goes to candidates based in Nairobi or where Nonviolent Peaceforce has an office, including Switzerland, South Sudan, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nairobi-based candidates need legal authority to work in Kenya.

How to apply

Applicants send a CV of no more than two pages and an estimated consultancy budget.
