Manager, Applied AI Engineering (Codex)

Overview

OpenAI is seeking an experienced technical leader to join as Manager, Applied AI Engineering for Codex. This role involves leading a team of Applied AI Engineers to help strategic customers successfully adopt Codex and transform how software is built using artificial intelligence. The position is available in the Munich and Berlin offices using a hybrid work model requiring three days in the office per week, and relocation assistance is offered.

Who can apply

Candidates must possess at least eight years of experience in deeply technical, customer-facing roles such as applied engineering, solutions architecture, deployment engineering, or technical consulting. Applicants are required to have at least two years of experience leading technical teams, which includes hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers. Individuals must also have experience building or deploying generative AI, developer platforms, agentic systems, or cloud-based software solutions in production environments, alongside strong hands-on software engineering experience and proficiency in programming languages like Python or JavaScript.

Requirements

Applicants must understand modern software development lifecycles and have strong intuition regarding how AI and coding agents impact software design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. Candidates need the ability to work directly with customer engineering teams to resolve ambiguous problems, develop technical approaches, and translate ideas into functional solutions. Strong communication skills are necessary for explaining complex technical and business concepts to engineering teams and executive stakeholders.
