Overview

INTERSOS, a humanitarian non-governmental organisation that assists people affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts and other crises, is inviting applications to its Chef de Mission roster. Successful candidates may be considered for future assignments in different countries where INTERSOS works. The Chef de Mission is the organisation's senior representative in the assigned country and leads its overall humanitarian response. The post is a 12-month contract, expected to start on 1 October 2026, in various locations depending on operational needs. It sits in the Programme/Project Management career area.

Who can apply

INTERSOS wants highly experienced humanitarian professionals with a university degree in project management, international affairs, development, political economy or a related field. At least 8 years of leadership experience in humanitarian settings is required. Fluent French is essential and English is preferred.

Requirements

Candidates should have worked with NGOs in developing countries, managed major grants and international donors, worked in insecure environments, and handled security planning and management. Skills sought include strategic planning, leadership and team management, networking, negotiation, decision-making, diplomacy, analysis, problem-solving and computer proficiency, including Word and Excel, plus commitment to humanitarian principles.

The role covers country strategy and programme development, representation before authorities and donors, leading the senior management team, oversight of finance, logistics and procurement, ultimate responsibility for country-level security, and monitoring of programme quality, impact and safeguarding.

What you get

The advertised salary is approximately EUR 4,505 to EUR 5,182 gross per month, depending on the assignment. Other benefits are shared guesthouse accommodation, medical insurance, 7 days of recovery leave every eight weeks with a EUR 1,000 allowance, and annual leave of 2.5 days per month. Return flights are covered, and missions of at least nine months include an additional return ticket to the employee's country of residence. Selected candidates get one week of online induction before deployment.
