Great Southern Reef Foundation Hiring Media & Storytelling Officer | Remote Australia | 15 Hours/Week
Overview
The Great Southern Reef Foundation is looking for a Media & Storytelling Officer to turn marine science, conservation research and community initiatives into engaging public content. The Foundation is building a national movement around the Great Southern Reef, an ecosystem stretching more than 8,000 kilometres around southern Australia that supports thousands of species and coastal communities. It works with researchers, conservation practitioners, educators, filmmakers and communities.
The role is remote and can be done from anywhere in Australia. It is part-time at 0.4 FTE, or 15 hours per week, on an initial six-month contract, with strong potential for ongoing and increased employment as the organisation grows. The source gives the closing date as until filled.
The officer will find stories in scientific research, expeditions, conservation projects, communities and policy developments, working with researchers, the Creative Director, project partners and the Great Southern Reef Research Partnership. Duties include writing articles, features and case studies, interviewing researchers and community members, developing media pitches and releases, preparing media kits and talking points, and responding to media enquiries. The person will also build relationships with journalists, editors and producers to secure coverage across print, digital, radio, television, podcasts and specialist outlets, and will spot opportunities early in the research process.
Requirements
The Foundation wants a proactive communicator with excellent storytelling, writing and editorial skills. Ideal experience is in journalism, science communication, media, communications or public relations, ideally with marine, environmental, conservation or research organisations. Candidates should be able to explain complex science clearly, and experience earning media coverage is desirable. Knowledge of marine science or conservation is important, familiarity with Australia's temperate marine ecosystems is an advantage, and existing relationships with science or environmental journalists would help. Strong interpersonal skills are essential because the work involves researchers, Traditional Owners, community organisations and partners.
How to apply
Candidates should review the full vacancy details and apply through the official recruitment platform. Since the post stays open until filled, early applications are encouraged.
