Overview

ORBIS International is seeking a Director, Flying Eye Hospital (FEH), a senior remote role open to candidates anywhere in the world who are authorised to work. ORBIS is a global nonprofit working to prevent avoidable blindness and improve access to quality eye care, with more than 40 years of partnership with health professionals, governments, hospitals and communities. The Flying Eye Hospital is described as the world's first and only fully accredited ophthalmic teaching hospital on board an MD-10 aircraft. The role involves up to 70% international travel and reports to the Senior Director, FEH Strategy and Partnerships.

What the role involves

The Director gives executive and operational leadership to all FEH activities, turning strategy into plans for clinical training projects, Goodwill Tours, special initiatives and international healthcare partnerships. Tasks include annual operating plans, performance indicators, risk monitoring, delivering the annual FEH schedule, coordinating timelines and budgets, keeping the aircraft, medical equipment and personnel ready, working with partner hospitals, ministries of health, airport authorities and local stakeholders, and capturing lessons learned. The Director also oversees clinical standards, patient safety, infection prevention and quality improvement, manages the operating budget and donor compliance, and leads a multidisciplinary international team. Direct reports are the Associate Director, Clinical Services, the Associate Director, Nursing, the Senior Program Manager, and the Senior Operations Manager.

Requirements

Applicants should have a degree in healthcare management, public health, international development or a related field, or equivalent experience, plus at least 7 years of leadership experience in global health, health systems strengthening or international programme management. They need experience managing multidisciplinary international teams, strong communication and negotiation skills and experience representing organisations externally. Expected competencies include strategic planning, managing complex international operations, cultural awareness, diplomacy and commitment to equity, integrity, accountability and innovation.
