The Gates Foundation is hiring a Senior Research Manager, Polio, a full-time senior global health research role based in Seattle, Washington. The manager leads the polio modeling team within the Foundation's Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM), which brings together research scientists and software engineers to build computational models that support evidence-based global health decisions. The role sits within the Elimination & Eradication team and works with senior leaders and the polio program strategy team to supply modeling results when strategic decisions need them. Travel of up to 20% is expected, domestic and international.
What you will do
The manager builds a forward-looking polio modeling strategy with the Elimination & Eradication Deputy Director, IDM leadership and polio program leadership, and manages the team's project portfolio by setting priorities, guiding methods and keeping deliverables accurate and on time. The role develops mathematical and statistical models to evaluate eradication strategies, including interventions that reduce transmission in endemic settings and keep elimination in controlled areas, and designs studies measuring program effects on transmission and disease. It also involves working with regional country offices and other teams, leading planning for quarterly IDM Research Reviews and managing direct reports.
Requirements
Applicants need a PhD in a relevant discipline such as infectious-disease dynamical or statistical modeling, epidemiology, polio immuno-epidemiology or vaccinology. The Foundation seeks a record of multidisciplinary work, modeling research that has influenced public health policy, advanced knowledge of dynamical and statistical models, experience with spatial analytics, advanced coding and AI capabilities, and strong project and people leadership. Candidates must explain complex findings to non-technical audiences and have unrestricted authorization to work where the position is located, as no immigration sponsorship is provided.
What you get
The general salary range is $238,400 to $369,400 per year, and $262,200 to $406,400 in Seattle or Washington, D.C. New hires are generally placed between the minimum and midpoint.
