Overview

Empowered by Light (EBL) is a nonprofit that improves lives through sustainable energy, working across education, health, economic development, environmental sustainability, and water and sanitation to help underserved communities reach reliable clean energy. It is hiring a full-time Director of Development at mid-level, starting September 1, 2026. The position is remote within the United States, although candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area are preferred because the role involves regular engagement with donors, board members and community partners.

The Director leads fundraising strategy and is expected to help raise 3 million dollars in contributed revenue over the next two fiscal years. Duties include building and carrying out a long-term fundraising strategy, cultivating and stewarding major donors, expanding foundation and corporate partnerships, supporting board fundraising, planning donor engagement and communications, leading fundraising events and community engagement, growing corporate sponsorship programs and strengthening donor acquisition through digital campaigns, email, social media and direct mail.

Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor's degree, at least five years of fundraising experience, proven success securing major gifts and institutional funding, experience managing donor portfolios and fundraising budgets, strong relationship-building and communication skills, nonprofit experience and a valid driver's license. Preferred extras are existing relationships with Bay Area foundations or donors, planned giving experience, knowledge of digital fundraising and multilingual or cross-cultural experience.

What you get

The salary is USD $120,000 to $140,000 per year. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid holidays and vacation, parental leave, disability coverage, a flexible remote schedule and professional development support.

How to apply

Candidates email a cover letter and resume with the subject line Director of Development Application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submissions are encouraged.
