Overview

Standard Bank is accepting applications for its Legal Graduate Programme, an 18-month, full-time programme starting in February 2027. It is based in the Communities of Expertise and SA Legal team in Johannesburg, at 30 Baker Street, within the Group Functions segment. Participants gain practical experience inside a major African financial institution, developing expertise in banking, finance, commercial law and financial markets.

The Legal function advises on business opportunities, regulatory matters, risks and threats, and helps develop sound controls over financial and commercial activity. The programme also offers exposure to innovation, new ways of working and data science, and shows how legal work connects with banking and wider business operations.

Who can apply

The programme is aimed at South African legal professionals early in their post-admission careers. Applicants must be South African citizens aged no more than 30, be admitted as attorneys in South Africa, have no more than two years of work experience after admission, and have an overall average of at least 65 percent across all years of study. Those who do not meet these minimums may not be considered.

Requirements

Standard Bank looks for a positive attitude, confidence, curiosity, adaptability and willingness to learn. Candidates should have strong commercial drafting skills and a real interest in banking, finance and financial markets, along with attention to detail, good written and verbal communication, and the ability to work independently and in teams. Analysing information from different sources, coordinating instructions, solving complex problems creatively, making considered decisions and delivering quality work on time are also valued.

How to apply

Applications are made through Standard Bank's official recruitment platform, quoting job reference 80434130A-0002. Candidates should check that their qualifications, admission status and experience are accurately stated. The bank says it will never ask for money or payment in its recruitment process and warns applicants to be cautious of scams. It also states a commitment to fair and inclusive employment and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, including people with disabilities.

Key dates

The closing date is 9 October 2026, and the programme begins in February 2027.
