Overview

The Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine presents the Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science Policy Fellowship for the year 2027. This 12-week summer programme places graduate students and postdoctoral researchers within Virginia state government offices, executive agencies, and nonprofit organisations to engage directly with science and public policy. The experience runs from May through August 2027, beginning with an orientation and science policy bootcamp, followed by a professional placement and concluding with project presentations at the annual COVES Forum.

Who can apply

The opportunity is open to eligible graduate students and postdoctoral researchers affiliated with specific participating institutions. These include Christopher Newport University, George Mason University, Hampton University, Marymount University, Norfolk State University, Radford University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, and William and Mary. Certain institutions carry specific criteria, such as Hampton University applicants needing enrollment in the School of Engineering, Architecture, and Aviation, Virginia Commonwealth University applicants requiring graduate student status, and Virginia State University restricting applicants to domestic graduate students within computer science, data analytics, or mathematics. International students must supply documentation confirming their eligibility to participate.

What you get

Participants receive a competitive summer stipend alongside professional development support. The programme delivers a 12-week professional placement, direct exposure to governmental and nonprofit policymaking, and interaction with experienced policymakers and technical experts. Fellows gain hands-on practice translating scientific research into policy recommendations, participate in networking events, field trips, briefings, and meetings, and connect with the broader professional network of the organizing academy.

Requirements

Interested individuals must submit an online application package that includes a resume or curriculum vitae, a personal statement, an advisor support letter, a reference, a science policy writing sample, and a description of preferred host offices and projects. Applications undergo evaluation based on academic qualifications, professional background, career objectives, communication skills, interest in science policy, and potential contributions to science and technology policymaking in Virginia.

How to apply

Candidates must complete and submit their documentation through the official online application portal before the closing time and date. Applicants are advised to review the application package carefully and verify their eligibility status with their respective universities prior to submission.

Key dates

The application deadline is 1 December 2026 at 11:59 PM EST. Successful fellows are announced on 16 January 2027, with host office matching occurring between March and April 2027. The orientation and science policy bootcamp takes place from 20 to 21 May 2027, and placements start on 24 May 2027. The fellowship concludes on 13 August 2027, followed by the end-of-year forum in August 2027.
