Overview

The Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), a global network advancing research on violence against women, violence against children and other forms of violence linked to gender inequality, is hiring a Communications Manager. The network connects researchers, practitioners, activists and funders to promote evidence-informed approaches, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The job is full-time and fully remote, open globally, with travel needed for some in-person meetings.

What you will do

The manager leads communications that raise the visibility and influence of SVRI's research, programmes, partnerships and impact. Duties include communicating research projects, capacity-building, courses, events and grant partner achievements, finding creative ways to share findings and lessons, running social media on a consistent calendar, using analytics, managing website content with SEO, supporting the weekly SVRI Update newsletter and email marketing, producing blogs, reports, podcasts, reels, images and videos, keeping branding consistent and developing project communications strategies. A key task is translating complex scientific research into clear messages while handling sensitive subject matter.

Requirements

SVRI seeks a degree or advanced degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or a related field, with additional experience in violence against women or children, public health, development or social sciences desirable. Applicants should have roughly 5 to 10 or more years in communications or public relations, including global communications, knowledge translation, research dissemination, social media, design and digital platforms. WordPress, Canva, video editing, web design, Mailchimp and database skills are valuable, along with the ability to work in multicultural remote teams and an understanding of trauma-informed and survivor-centred communications.

What you get

The annual salary is US$35,000 to US$40,000 depending on experience, paid in South African Rand for applicants based in South Africa, who may also use office space in Pretoria.

How to apply

Applications go through Workable and need a letter of application, an English CV with three referees, and a portfolio with at least one campaign, 4 to 5 social media posts and designs, and 1 to 2 press releases or writing samples. Video, podcast or web design examples may be added.

Key dates

The deadline is 13 September 2026 at 23:59 South Africa time.
