UNESCO Internship Job 2026: Complete Guide to UNESCO’s Global Internship Programme for Students and Recent Graduates
Overview
The UNESCO Internship Programme places students and recent graduates in practical roles at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. UNESCO was established in 1945 to build peace through international cooperation in education, science, culture, communication and information, and works with more than 190 Member States. Interns are assigned to sectors, divisions, institutes, field offices or headquarters departments according to their academic background, skills and organisational needs.
Interns actively support ongoing projects rather than observing. Common duties include background research, data collection and analysis, drafting reports and policy briefs, preparing presentations, assisting with project implementation and programme coordination, organising workshops and meetings, preparing official documents and minutes, monitoring project progress, managing databases, supporting communication campaigns and international events, and administrative tasks. Some interns also contribute to speechwriting, editorial work, social media, knowledge management or strategic planning.
Placements are available at headquarters, regional offices, country offices, specialised institutes, research centres and field offices, across fields including education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information, international relations, law, journalism, economics, finance, information technology, statistics and sustainable development.
Who can apply
Applicants are generally expected to be enrolled in a graduate, postgraduate or doctoral programme, or to have recently graduated within the eligible period, and to be at least 20 years old at the time of application. Excellent academic performance, strong analytical, research and communication skills, professionalism, initiative and the ability to work in multicultural environments are expected. Proficiency in English or French is required, and knowledge of other UNESCO working languages is an advantage. Selection is highly competitive.
What you get
Internships last from one month to six months, which allows students to fit them around university schedules or academic requirements. Interns gain international work experience, exposure to United Nations operations, mentorship from experienced experts, networking with global professionals and growth in research, analytical and communication skills.
