UNDP Internship Programme 2026: Stipend-Supported Opportunities Worldwide
Overview
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) runs an internship programme for students and recent graduates who want practical experience in international development. Internships are offered through UNDP country offices, regional hubs and headquarters in New York. Because the programme is decentralized, each office advertises its own vacancies according to its needs.
Assignments cover research, economics, climate change, environment and sustainability, communications, administration, governance, public administration, data and technology, programme management, poverty reduction, energy and resilience, peacebuilding and social inclusion. Some internships are done in person and some remotely, as stated in each vacancy.
Who can apply
The programme is aimed at students and recent graduates. At the time of application, candidates generally need to be in the final year of a bachelor's degree, enrolled in a master's programme, or recently graduated and starting the internship within one year of graduation. Previous professional experience is not required, but applicants should show interest in development and relevant academic or technical expertise.
What you get
Interns are eligible for a monthly stipend unless the internship is sponsored by another institution or government. There is no single worldwide amount: the rate depends on the duty station and on whether the internship is in person or remote, and part-time arrangements may be prorated. The stipend is not a UN salary.
Internships generally last up to six months, and up to nine months when completed for academic credit. They may be full-time or part-time. The programme is separate from UNDP's employment activities and creates no expectation of a job, although former interns may apply for vacancies as external candidates.
Requirements
UNDP does not provide medical or accident insurance for interns. Interns must arrange their own medical coverage for the whole internship and give proof of it before starting. Remote interns need a suitable working environment and the technology to complete their assignments.
How to apply
Vacancies are published on UNDP's official job platform. Candidates search for roles that match their studies, review the eligibility rules, duties, location, duration and work arrangement, and prepare a CV and, where asked, a tailored cover letter and supporting documents.
