Overview

Health Data Research UK organizes an eight-week paid internship focused on health data science for summer 2027. The initiative aims to provide participants with practical experience, professional skills development, and exposure to health research and healthcare innovation.

Who can apply

The opportunity is open to individuals of Black heritage, which includes African, Caribbean, or other Black backgrounds and Black mixed heritage. Eligible candidates must be current students at a UK university across undergraduate, postgraduate, master’s, PhD, or returning levels, or recent graduates who completed their studies at a UK university in 2025 or 2026. International students currently registered at a university in the UK are also eligible, provided they hold the legal right to work in the UK and remain based in the country throughout the recruitment process and placement. The programme does not offer visa sponsorship. Applicants must not have been successful interns of the programme previously. There is no requirement for minimum academic grades, prior professional background, or coding proficiency.

What you get

Interns receive compensation based on the London Living Wage at a rate of £14.80 per hour. The placement features practical project work with host organisations, training sessions on Friday afternoons, a dedicated mentor and line manager, a customised learning pathway through a futures programme, and potential provision of a laptop for the internship period. Participants also gain access to networking events, a team technical challenge, a completion certificate, entry into the wider 10,000 Black Interns community, and ongoing career support via an alumni network.

Requirements

Candidates must be based in the UK and possess the legal right to work in the country for the full duration of the recruitment and internship phases. While open to any academic background, studies in subjects such as mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, data science, bioinformatics, and related fields align well with the placement.
