2027 Summer Intern, PhD, Machine Learning, Simulation Realism
Overview
Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, is recruiting a 2027 summer intern for a PhD-level machine learning position focused on simulation realism, based in London. Waymo's mission is to be the world's most trusted driver, and its Waymo Driver has completed over ten million rider-only trips and driven more than 100 million miles on public roads, plus tens of billions of miles in simulation.
The intern joins Software Engineering, which builds the software that lets the Waymo Driver perceive its surroundings, make decisions and deliver passengers safely. Interns work with industry leaders on projects that have an impact on the company, and learning is described as a two-way street.
What you will do
The intern develops controllable and realistic adversarial agents for more efficient simulation-based evaluation and deploys them in the Waymo Simulator. The role also involves iterating on post-training recipes for state-of-the-art foundation models and Waymo World Models.
Requirements
Applicants should currently be pursuing a PhD in computer science, machine learning, robotics or a related technical field. They need proficiency in Python and tensor manipulation using PyTorch, NumPy, JAX, TensorFlow or similar, experience with machine learning and deep learning, and hands-on experience with model post-training and reinforcement learning. Preferred qualifications are hands-on experience with attention mechanisms, diffusion or autoregressive architectures, and experience with autonomous driving or robotics.
How to apply
This is a hybrid onsite internship. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the role is filled. Candidates who want to be considered for multiple roles must apply to each one individually and are asked to choose their top three. Interns are eligible for the company's benefits programmes, subject to eligibility requirements.
