Overview

The KWI International Fellowships 2027 give researchers in the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences six months of independent research in Germany. They are hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, an interdisciplinary research institute that brings scholars together on complex global issues. The fellowship period runs from 1 April 2027 to 30 September 2027, and fellows are expected to live in Essen and take part in institute activities such as seminars, workshops, conferences and lectures. Two routes exist: the International Fellowship and the Thyssen@KWI Fellowship.

What you get

Fellows receive a monthly fellowship allowance, office space, library access, research infrastructure, technical, administrative, event and communication support, academic mentoring and international networking. Travel costs for arrival and departure are partially reimbursed. The fellowship is meant to let researchers focus on their work without teaching or administrative duties.

Who can apply

Applicants should hold a completed PhD, with an excellent academic record, a strong publication profile, an original research proposal aligned with KWI's priorities, strong English and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting. International Fellowship applicants should normally have up to six years of postdoctoral experience, while Thyssen@KWI applicants should have several years of postdoctoral research experience and a strong international profile. Researchers from all countries may apply. Eligible fields include cultural studies, history, sociology, political science, anthropology, philosophy, literature, media and communication studies, gender, migration and religious studies, science studies, visual culture, environmental humanities and public humanities.

How to apply

Applicants prepare an updated CV, a detailed research proposal, a list of publications, a PhD certificate, academic references if required and any other documents the call requests. Selection looks at academic excellence, originality, publication record, feasibility and fit with KWI research priorities, and the proposal should explain why the project benefits from KWI's interdisciplinary environment.
