John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships 2027-2028 ($135,000 stipend)
Overview
The John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships 2027-2028 program offers a nine-month experience taking place from September through May at Stanford University. Fellows step away from their daily routines to explore a specific question they bring to the program, test new approaches, and develop as purposeful and resilient leaders. The fellowship aims to support individuals working to solve journalism's challenges and strengthen democratic resilience.
Who can apply
Applicants must have a minimum of five years of professional experience. A college degree and traditional newsroom experience are not required, and student work or internships do not count toward the professional experience requirement. Eligible applicants include those directly producing journalistic content in any capacity, individuals working in newsroom operations or strategy roles, and people working with organizations that support or collaborate directly with journalists. This includes editors, producers, photographers, audience and community builders, and publishers.
What you get
Selected fellows receive a stipend of $135,000 for the nine-month duration. Additional benefits include Stanford tuition and health insurance, along with a health supplement for dependents who enroll in Stanford coverage. Participants also receive assistance with finding rental housing and settling into the Stanford area for themselves and their families. The program provides individual coaching, customized workshops, access to the global JSK alumni network, and the opportunity to explore Stanford academic and creative offerings.
Requirements
Fellows must maintain residency at Stanford from September through May and treat the program as a full-time commitment. Participants are required to join weekly cohort meetings, attend biweekly one-on-one coaching sessions, and take part in occasional JSK and Stanford events. Additional expectations include sharing insights and reflections publicly throughout the fellowship and collaborating respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Key dates
The application deadline is December 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time. Extensions and late applications are not accepted under any circumstances.
