Overview

The Jane Street Graduate Research Fellowship is an annual funding initiative sponsored by Jane Street to support outstanding doctoral researchers. The programme is designed to recognise technical excellence, intellectual curiosity, and rigorous research across specific academic fields without requiring candidates to focus on finance or trading.

Who can apply

The opportunity is open to domestic and international doctoral students who are currently enrolled in an eligible programme with at least one year remaining, or students who have committed to starting an eligible PhD programme in Fall 2027. Applicants must be based at accredited, degree-granting research institutions located in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or Singapore. Eligible fields of study include electrical engineering and computer science, mathematics, physics, and statistics.

What you get

Selected fellows receive full tuition and fee coverage for the upcoming academic year, along with a US$50,000 stipend or its equivalent in local currency to help cover living expenses. Additionally, finalists who do not receive the main fellowship are awarded a separate monetary prize of US$5000. Recipients are also invited to visit a Jane Street office with covered expenses to present a talk on a topic of their choice and connect with other researchers and professionals.

Requirements

Applicants must maintain active, full-time student status in good academic standing for the duration of the covered academic year. The application process requires an up-to-date curriculum vitae or résumé detailing academic qualifications, publications, and research experience. Candidates must also submit a one-to-two-page research statement explaining their ongoing or proposed work in a manner accessible to technically knowledgeable readers outside their immediate specialisation. Additionally, applicants must provide contact details for recommenders whom Jane Street will contact directly for letters of support.

Key dates

The application deadline is 13 November 2026, and recommendation letters must be submitted by 1 December 2026. Expected award notifications will be announced in February 2027.
