Australia Awards Scholarships are the government's flagship scheme for students from selected developing countries, aimed at people with leadership potential. Eligibility depends on the participating country, and applications are normally submitted online through the national awards system or a country-specific portal. Scholars are expected to return home for a period after finishing. Other routes are more decentralised: universities offer their own merit scholarships, the Research Training Program supports research degrees through direct applications to universities, and some states and regional cities run separate schemes.
Most international students enter on a Student visa (subclass 500). Applicants need a Confirmation of Enrolment from the education provider, evidence of funds, English test results where applicable, Overseas Student Health Cover, and a convincing Genuine Student statement about their study plans and ties to their home country. Student visa holders can work up to a fixed number of hours per fortnight while classes are in session. Student rules change often, so check Home Affairs before applying.
After graduating, bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates may qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) in the Post-Study Work stream. Other routes include employer sponsorship and skilled migration. Large employers run graduate programs that can open up to a year ahead and are advertised on job boards. Applicants commonly give generic Genuine Student answers, assume scholarship eligibility without checking their country's profile, and rely on outdated visa guides.
