PhD Studentship: Winds and Waves in the Alpine Mountains
Overview
This PhD studentship focuses on investigating winds and waves in the Alpine mountains through the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. The project addresses how mountains affect atmospheric circulation by generating orographic gravity waves that propagate upwards, break down, and create a frictional drag force that slows down upper-level winds and causes clear-air turbulence. Because poor understanding of these processes leads to errors in numerical weather prediction models and weather forecasts, the research utilizes measurements gathered during the international TEAMx atmospheric research campaign held over the Alps.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a degree in Meteorology, Physics, Maths, or a similar quantitative science. Candidates are also required to possess an essential interest in meteorology, data analysis, and numerical modelling.
What you get
Selected candidates who meet the UKRI eligibility criteria receive a fully-funded studentship covering university fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for the 2026/27 period, and a research training and support grant subject to UKRI terms and conditions. The registering university waves the difference between home and international fees for a limited number of international applicants. Additionally, participants receive training in fluid dynamics, mountain meteorological processes, data analysis, and running Met Office numerical weather prediction models, alongside dedicated funding for conferences, skills development, and cohort residential training.
Key dates
The application closing date is 23:59 on 16 December 2026.
