PhD Studentship: High-Efficiency Power Electronics for AI Data Centres and Net-Zero Grids
Overview
This PhD studentship focuses on high-efficiency power electronics for artificial intelligence data centres and net-zero grids. The project centers on developing medium-voltage Solid-State Transformers tailored for hyperscale facilities and net-zero grids by combining wide-bandgap power semiconductors and high-frequency magnetics. The research combines multi-physics finite-element modelling with experimental validation in a high-voltage power electronics laboratory to build a scaled hardware prototype. The student will be supervised by Dr Jiaqi Yan and Prof. Layi Alatise at the University of Warwick within the School of Engineering.
Who can apply
Candidates must hold a first-class or strong upper second-class degree, or an equivalent qualification, in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline. Applicants are required to have a solid theoretical foundation in power electronics, power semiconductor devices, or high-voltage engineering, alongside hands-on experience in power electronic systems, devices, or high-voltage setups. Desirable qualifications include experience with multi-physics simulation tools such as ANSYS and COMSOL, high-speed printed circuit board design, or embedded digital signal processor and field-programmable gate array control. International candidates are welcome to apply provided they can cover the difference in fee levels.
What you get
The award covers the UK tuition fee level and provides a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum, paid at the prevailing UK Research and Innovation rate for 3.5 years of full-time study.
Requirements
Applicants must fulfill the University of Warwick entry criteria and secure an unconditional offer of admission before starting enrolment. Notification of acceptance for the doctoral program does not guarantee financial support, and successful scholarship candidates will receive a separate official communication confirming their award from the School of Engineering.
How to apply
Interested candidates need to submit a full formal application following the guidance and using the application form available through the university's application system.
