Overview

This PhD studentship explores the long-term impact of sex on evolutionary adaptation, examining why sexual reproduction remains widespread despite the costs. The research integrates comparative genomics in Drosophila with population genetic simulations to test hypotheses related to sexually concordant and sexually antagonistic selection, population viability, and adaptation following historical migration out of Africa. The host institution is the University of East Anglia within the Department of Biological Sciences, positioned inside the Norwich Research Park alongside various biotechnology institutes and the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Conservation.

Who can apply

Candidates must hold a degree in biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, or a similar discipline. Helpful skills include prior experience working with Drosophila, knowledge of evolutionary principles, and an enthusiasm to learn statistics, coding, and bioinformatics. The opportunity is open to both home and international applicants, though the number of studentships available for international candidates is limited.

What you get

The position provides a fully-funded studentship subject to UKRI terms and conditions for candidates meeting the eligibility criteria. The funding covers university fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for the 2026/27 period, and a research training and support grant. For successful international applicants, the registering university waives the difference between home and international fees.

Requirements

Applicants must submit an application for the relevant project and also complete a separate equality and diversity form for each project application submitted. Funding does not cover expenses related to relocating to the United Kingdom, such as visa fees or the healthcare surcharge.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-12-16.
