PhD Studentship: The AD[A]PT (Architectural Design And Humanities Promoting Transformation) Consortium AHRC Doctoral Focal Award - Hosted at Oxford Brookes School of Architecture
Overview
This full-time PhD studentship is hosted at the Oxford Brookes School of Architecture through the AD[A]PT Consortium AHRC Doctoral Focal Award. The program supports arts and humanities research aimed at creating healthier people, places, and a healthier planet. Candidates can apply through either an Open Call or Set Briefs, with some partner-supported positions operating as Collaborative Doctoral Awards where students may spend part of their time based within a partner organization.
Who can apply
The opportunity is open to home, EU, and international students. Applicants from under-represented groups are welcomed. All candidates must hold a first or upper second-class honours degree from a UK Higher Education Institution or an acceptable equivalent qualification. International and EU applicants are additionally required to provide a valid IELTS Academic test certificate or equivalent with an overall minimum score of 6.0 and no individual score below 5.5, issued within the last two years by an approved test centre.
What you get
The successful candidate receives a full-time PhD studentship spanning 3.5 to 4 years. The financial support includes a salary or stipend of £21,805 per annum. Tuition fees are covered up to the home student rate.
Requirements
Applicants must utilize suitable arts and humanities methods in their project design to ensure eligibility for funding. Research proposals should align with the AD[A]PT vision of identifying barriers to healthy places, developing strategies to overcome them, and employing design-led arts and humanities methods to support United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, net-zero targets, safety standards, and inclusive, biodiverse environments. Successful international candidates are responsible for funding the difference between home and international tuition fees for the duration of the studentship, as well as covering visas and associated costs.
How to apply
Candidates can choose to apply via an Open Call across various themes or through one of four Set Briefs supported by partners such as RIBA, RICS, and CIOB. Applications must follow the full guidance available on the program website.
Key dates
The application closing date is 13th January 2027 at 5pm GMT. Interviews will take place online in early March, and the studentship is scheduled to start on 1st October 2027.
