Postdoc Research Fellows in Mining Mineral Life
Overview
Nanyang Technological University invites applications for postdoctoral research fellow positions within the School of Humanities and the NTU Asian School of the Environment. These positions are part of the Mining Mineral Life project led by Assistant Professor Adam Bobbette. The research initiative investigates how the extraction of critical minerals for the energy transition is transforming landscapes and livelihoods across Southeast Asia. The program combines geoscience, artisanal knowledges, mineral cosmologies, and the histories of critical minerals. Available positions include funding for fieldwork and conferences.
Who can apply
Candidates may apply for one of two distinct tracks depending on their research focus. Research Fellow A is a twenty-four-month appointment focused on investigating the impacts of tin mining on the landscapes and livelihoods of Bangka Island in Indonesia, with an emphasis on geographic information systems, remote sensing, geomorphology, and mapping. Research Fellow B is a thirty-six-month appointment intended for scholars interested in the intersection of the humanities and geosciences who propose an independent research project related to critical mineral extraction in Southeast Asia. This track welcomes proposals engaging with political geology, geo-solidarities, and mineral cosmologies.
Requirements
Applicants for the mapping-oriented position are expected to cross boundaries between the humanities and geosciences and to experiment with geomorphological analysis and techniques. Candidates for the three-year position must demonstrate ambitious and creative approaches to scholarship, develop their own projects, and contribute to a research program that includes international conferences, seminars, exhibitions, artistic collaborations, and public programming.
How to apply
Interested individuals should submit their applications by the specified closing date and time. Enquiries regarding the positions can be directed to Assistant Professor Adam Bobbette via email.
Key dates
The application deadline is 04 December 2026 at 6:00pm.
