Overview

This studentship investigates the evolutionary puzzle of postreproductive maternal care and its relationship with sex differences in lifespan. Based at the School of Biological Sciences within the University of East Anglia, the research uses the nematode Caenorhabditis kamaaina alongside a living collection of wild nematode species to test intergenerational transfer theory experimentally. The project combines measurements of sex-specific survival and reproduction with custom genetic tools to examine the fundamental biology linking postreproductive care and extended life.

What you get

The successful candidate receives a fully-funded studentship that covers university fees and a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for the 2026 and 2027 period, subject to UKRI terms and conditions. A research training and support grant is also provided. Selected international applicants can have the difference between home and international fees waived by the registering university, though funding does not cover relocation expenses, visas, or health surcharges. Scholars receive multi-disciplinary training in evolutionary ecology, biology, and bio-gerontology, alongside participation in external training courses, research discussion groups, and journal clubs to build skills in experimental design, coding in R, molecular ecology, genetics, and scientific communication.

Requirements

Applicants should be enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals who possess a strong interest in genetics, ecology, or evolution. Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria established by UKRI to qualify for the fully-funded award.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is December 16, 2026.
