Overview

A fully-funded PhD studentship is available to investigate how bacterial hosts control domesticated viral machines to drive horizontal gene transfer in marine environments. The research focuses on gene transfer agents, which are phage-derived particles that package random host chromosome fragments and transfer them to neighboring cells. The project uses Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3 as a model organism to examine regulatory networks, ecological triggers, and the abundance and diversity of gene transfer agents in marine Roseobacter communities. Training is provided through the Le lab at the John Innes Centre, alongside the Todd lab, with additional mentoring from scientists at the Quadram Institute and the University of East Anglia.
