PhD Studentship in Aeronautics: Real-time Data Assimilation for Multi-physics Flows (AE0095)
Overview
A fully-funded PhD studentship is offered at the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College London, focusing on real-time data assimilation for multi-physics flows. The project aims to develop bias-aware data assimilation methods that estimate and correct model error as dynamics evolve, without violating the physics. The research involves prototyping methods on low-order dynamical systems and scaling them up to higher-dimensional multi-physics problems. The position runs for a duration of 3.5 years, with the start date scheduled between 1st August 2027 and 1st July 2027.
Who can apply
Candidates are expected to achieve or have already achieved a First class honours MEng, MSci, or higher degree, or an international equivalent, in mathematical or engineering disciplines such as Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Physics. An advantageous background includes computational physics or mathematics, data assimilation, or dynamical systems for fluid mechanics. The opportunity is open to Home, EU, and International students.
What you get
The studentship provides full tuition fees along with an annual tax-free stipend of £23,805. Throughout the 3.5-year duration, recipients gain experience in data assimilation, Bayesian inference, physics-constrained machine learning, and computational methods for multi-physics systems. Scholars utilize high-performance computing facilities, present findings at international conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and take advantage of Imperial's doctoral training programme and career support.
Key dates
The application deadline is 23:59 UK time on 4th January 2027. The closing date is 2027-01-04, and the start date takes place between 1st August 2027 and 1st July 2028.
