Overview

The Brahmal Institute offers a PhD studentship focused on fast topology-optimised heat exchangers for circular aircraft mro, starting in October 2027. This opportunity is part of the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Aviation under the strategic theme of sustainability across stakeholders. The research centers on developing automated topology optimisation methods that adapt spare parts to available materials and additive manufacturing equipment while preserving performance, with applications in future airport hydrogen infrastructure and aircraft maintenance. The project combines physics-based modelling, gradient-based optimisation, scientific machine learning, and life-cycle assessment over a duration of 3.5 years.

Who can apply

Applicants must have obtained or expect to obtain a first-class honours Master's degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering or allied disciplines such as Computational Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics. Candidates need a strong background in numerical methods and scientific computing, excellent verbal and written technical communication skills, a creative approach to problem-solving, and a demonstrated understanding of and passion for sustainability. Both Home and International students are eligible to apply.

What you get

The studentship provides full coverage of tuition fees, a generous travel budget, and an annual tax-free stipend of £23,805. Students also participate in shared learning, specialist training, networking, and outreach activities alongside their individual research projects.

Requirements

Applicants must be capable of developing and applying new concepts, prioritising work to meet deadlines, organising their own work with minimal supervision, and writing clearly and succinctly for publication.

How to apply

Candidates must submit their applications through the Imperial College London study portal, referencing reference BI0001 and addressing the application to The Brahmal Vasudevan Institute. Applicants should type Aeronautics Research (PhD) into the programme search bar and select Brahmal Institute as the group. Instead of a research statement, applicants must attach a one-page A4 letter of interest addressing two specific questions with a maximum of 200 words each: steps taken and future plans to become a leader in sustainability, and why their background and experience make them a good fit for the programme.

Key dates

The application deadline is 4 January 2027. The programme starts in October 2027.
