Overview

This PhD studentship focuses on human-referenced colour processing, investigating the similarities and divergences between architectures for solving dynamic range compression in humans and machines. The research aims to design an architecture consistent with human vision while employing modern machine learning techniques to optimize performance. The work builds upon Land and McCanns Retinex theory, its interpretation in brain physiology, and its numerical algorithm re-engineering, while also examining why current non-human-vision-referenced machine learning algorithms yield poor results. The project takes place in the Colour and Imaging Lab at the University of East Anglia within the School of Computing Sciences, located in the United Kingdom.

What you get

The funding covers home tuition fees and an annual stipend for three years, set at an institutional rate of 21,805 pounds per annum, subject to any agreed inflationary uplift for the 2027/28 period. This PhD project is part of a competition for a Faculty of Science funded studentship.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the standard minimum entry requirement of a 2:1 degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or other numerate disciplines. The funding is available to United Kingdom applicants.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 24 February 2027. The mode of study is full-time, with the start date scheduled for 1 October 2027.
