Overview

Coventry University Group is hiring a Research Fellow to work within the Research Centre for E-Mobility and Clean Growth. This 12-month fixed-term position is fully funded by Innovate UK and begins on February 1st 2027. The role focuses on an industry-led collaborative research project regarding battery intelligence for battery energy storage systems, combining academic expertise with industrial requirements for battery performance assessment, condition monitoring, and state estimation.

Who can apply

Applicants must hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Science, Energy Systems, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline. Alternatively, candidates with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree combined with equivalent relevant research or industrial experience are eligible.

What you get

The position provides a salary ranging from £38,784 to £42,254 per annum. Staff benefits include an employer pension contribution, 30 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, the option to purchase up to 5 additional holiday days, life assurance at four times the salary, and a BUPA cash plan. Additional benefits consist of a 50 percent reduction in tuition fees for staff dependants, a retail discount scheme, and a cycle to work program.

Requirements

Candidates must possess expertise in lithium-ion batteries, battery management systems, battery performance, and ageing. Essential qualifications also include a strong research track record with high-quality publications, successful multidisciplinary teamwork, experience in developing research proposals and projects, and advanced knowledge of research methods and regulatory compliance. Preference is given to applicants skilled in combining physics-based battery modelling and artificial intelligence-driven approaches for robust battery state-estimation methods. Familiarity with lithium iron phosphate batteries, including voltage hysteresis and flat open-circuit voltage characteristics, is considered advantageous.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-12-06. The project officially starts on February 1st 2027.
