PhD Studentship: Historical genomics of the declining red squirrel in Britain
Overview
This studentship focuses on the historical genomics of the declining red squirrel population in Britain. The project investigates how past processes like deforestation, hunting, the introduction of the invasive grey squirrel, and historical translocations from continental Europe have affected the genetic makeup, fitness, and ancestry of British squirrels. Whole genomes will be sequenced from surviving populations and museum specimens using historical DNA techniques to understand population decline and rescue, evaluate past translocations, and test for the loss of native British ancestry.
What you get
Successful candidates who meet the eligibility criteria receive a fully funded studentship covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of 21805 British pounds per annum for the 2026 and 2027 period, and a research training and support grant.
