Overview

This studentship focuses on the evolutionary genomics of mimicry within Neotropical Corydoradinae catfishes. The research investigates whether the repeated evolution of similar colour patterns across multiple mimicry rings in South America is driven by identical genetic mechanisms, utilizing comparative and population genomics to examine adaptation, selective sweeps, and divergent selection. The student will work with chromosome-level reference genomes, RNA-seq datasets, and whole-genome resequencing data, with potential opportunities for collaborative fieldwork in South America.

Who can apply

Candidates are required to hold or expect to obtain a First or Upper Second-Class degree or equivalent in Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Evolutionary Biology, Zoology, or a related discipline. Applicants must also possess a strong interest in evolutionary biology and genomics. While experience in programming or bioinformatics is not strictly required, familiarity with languages such as R or Python is considered advantageous.

What you get

The successful candidate receives a fully-funded studentship that covers tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are open to international applicants, with the registering university waiving the difference between home and international fees. Comprehensive training is provided in bioinformatics, molecular biology, genome resequencing, high-performance computing, comparative and population genomics, phylogenomics, UNIX, Linux, and programming in R and Python.

Requirements

The studentship is governed by UKRI terms and conditions, and successful applicants must meet the eligibility criteria established by UKRI. The funding does not cover relocation costs, living expenses in the United Kingdom, visa application fees, or the healthcare surcharge. The work is conducted on site at the University of East Anglia under a full-time, fixed-term contract.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-12-16.
