PhD Studentship: Ecosystem Responses to Changes in Ocean Circulation
Overview
This PhD studentship focuses on investigating ecosystem responses to changes in ocean circulation. Marine ecosystems react almost immediately to rapid physical reorganizations of the ocean caused by climate change, such as a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, strengthening Southern Ocean upwelling, and increasing surface ocean stratification. The research will examine how functional groups and trophic structures reorganize due to these circulation shifts and evaluate the resulting implications for ocean carbon storage, contributing to the broader understanding of marine biodiversity and climate change interactions.
What you get
Successful candidates who meet the eligibility criteria receive a fully-funded studentship that covers tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for the 2026/27 period, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the registering university waiving the difference between home and international fees. The student will join the Greenocean research group at the University of East Anglia, benefit from international collaborations, and receive specific training in ocean ecosystem modelling, AI-based code development, and data analysis. Access is also provided to specialized courses covering Python, Linux, High-Performance Computing, data and code sharing via GitHub, and relevant summer schools.
Requirements
The project is well-suited for individuals holding a first degree in any science discipline who possess an interest in marine ecosystems and climate change. Applicants with experience in applied mathematics or computer programming, alongside a specific interest in modelling or machine learning, are particularly encouraged to apply. ARIES studentships are governed by UKRI terms and conditions, and international applicants must note that the funding does not cover relocation expenses, living costs in the United Kingdom, visa fees, or the health surcharge.
How to apply
Candidates should apply directly through the designated institutional process while ensuring they meet the eligibility criteria outlined by UKRI and the registering university.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 2026-12-16.
