PhD Studentship: Dynamics driving photoswitchable molecules using laser spectroscopy
Overview
A full-time, fixed-term PhD studentship is available at the University of East Anglia, supervised by Associate Professor James Bull and supported by an EPSRC grant. The research project investigates the excited- and ground-state dynamics of photoswitchable molecules that undergo light-driven structural changes, with potential applications in smart materials, photomolecular motors, and photopharmacology. Experiments will examine photoisomerisation, excited-state relaxation, and photochemical efficiency across both the gas phase and condensed phase. The study uses custom-built vacuum instrumentation and advanced ultrafast laser systems to uncover the mechanisms underlying photoswitching and to establish structure-dynamics relationships that guide the rational design of more efficient molecular photoswitches.
Who can apply
This PhD project is part of a competition for a Faculty of Science funded studentship. Funding is available specifically to United Kingdom applicants.
What you get
The studentship provides coverage for home tuition fees and an annual stipend for a duration of 3 years. The current institutional PhD stipend rate is 21,805 British pounds per annum, which is subject to any agreed inflationary uplift for the 2027 to 2028 period. In addition, the successful candidate receives comprehensive training in laser spectroscopy, vacuum instrumentation, ultrafast experimental techniques, and data analysis while working alongside experienced researchers.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a first-class or 2:1 Bachelor degree in either Chemistry or Physics.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 24 February 2027. The intended start date for the position is 1 October 2027.
