PhD Studentship: Development of Intra-Red Thin Film Optoelectronic Devices
Overview
A three-year PhD studentship is available focusing on the development of infrared thin film optoelectronic devices. The project addresses the need for clear optical windows in technologies such as thermal imaging cameras and night-vision sensors, which require components that transmit infrared light while blocking environmental oxygen and moisture. The research involves creating a new type of multilayer filter that combines polymer layers with thin films of metals and ceramics to serve as hermetic gas barriers without losing infrared transmission.
The successful candidate will work in the Surface Engineering Laboratory located in the Dalton Building at Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as at the premises of an industrial partner, Brinell Vision Ltd, situated in Irlam, Manchester. Guidance and support will be provided by an experienced multidisciplinary supervisory team, with access to advanced laboratories containing production, characterisation, and testing equipment. The expected start date for this position is April 2027.
Who can apply
This opportunity is restricted to home students only. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree with a first or upper second-class honours in materials science, engineering, or a closely related subject. Candidates are also required to demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills along with the ability to carry out experiments accurately and safely and produce written or verbal reports.
Desirable qualifications include a relevant postgraduate degree such as an MEng, MSc, MSci, or MRes. Prior experience with research projects, particularly in optical modelling or the production and testing of thin films, is also considered advantageous.
What you get
The award covers home tuition fees for the duration of the three-year program, which amounts to £5,238 for the 2026/27 academic year. Additionally, the student will receive a standard stipend payment set at the level determined by UKRI, which is currently £21,805 for the 2026/27 year.
How to apply
Applicants must complete the online application form for a full-time PhD in Engineering. Submissions must include the Doctoral Project Applicant Form, a curriculum vitae, and a covering letter explaining the applicant's interest and importance in the research area, alongside demonstrating how their experience aligns with the project aims and objectives. These documents can be uploaded through the university admissions portal or submitted via email to the postgraduate admissions office.
Key dates
The application closing date is 2026-11-17. The expected start date for the studentship is April 2027.
