PhD Studentship: Data-driven Control Engineering for Large-scale Uncertain Systems
Overview
This is a three and a half year D.Phil. research studentship focused on data-driven control engineering for large-scale uncertain systems, hosted within the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. The project is supervised by Professor Antonis Papachristodoulou and Professor Kostas Margellos. The research integrates with activities in the new MSc on AI for Engineering Biology and aims to address challenges in modernizing control engineering by combining data-driven algorithms, optimization, and statistical learning. The position begins in October 2027 and is carried out on site in the United Kingdom.
Who can apply
The studentship is available to UK students, who receive a full award covering home fees and a stipend. There is potential flexibility to support international students, and interested international applicants are advised to contact the supervisors to determine if this flexibility applies to them.

Requirements
Applicants must hold a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics, alongside excellent written and spoken English communication skills. Desirable areas of expertise include Control Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, and programming or software engineering, though candidates are not expected to have expertise in all of these fields.
How to apply
Interested individuals are encouraged to make informal enquiries to Professor Antonis Papachristodoulou and Professor Kostas Margellos. Candidates must submit a graduate application form through the university admissions process and quote the reference code 27ENGCO_AP in all correspondence and on their application.
