Overview

The University of Exeter Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a full-time, fixed-term PhD studentship focusing on cut and project schemes in hyperbolic space with applications to acoustic metamaterials. This project explores the mathematical study of aperiodic order, ergodic theory, and hyperbolic geometry to address questions concerning order versus disorder, diffraction, and spectral theory. The research builds on recent work involving point sets arising from cut and project schemes and quadratic curve constructions used to build high-performing sound insulators.

The studentship is divided into two main parts. The first part aims to advance the theoretical framework of cut and project schemes in hyperbolic space and extract spectral information of diffraction measures and associated Schrödinger operators from the resulting point sets. The second part initiates investigations into building and testing new metamaterials derived from the mathematical theory developed in the initial phase. Funding for the position is provided by the EPSRC Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

About University of Exeter

The University of Exeter is a public research university in the West Country of England, based mainly in Exeter, Devon, with further campuses in Cornwall. Its origins lie in St Luke's College (1838), the Exeter schools of Art and Science, and the Camborne School of Mines. A royal charter in 1955 created the university. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities.
